Room 12 Helps Us Out!

This afternoon 4 students from Room 12 (Miria, Don, Elizabeth and Damien) popped into our room to show us how to embed videos, improve the layout of our presentations and use animations and backgrounds in our inquiry learning.
They explained how to transfer our hydropower information from google docs to google slides. The session was awesome with these expert learners from Room 12 sharing their knowledge and teaching us new tips and tricks.

The Door-By Akanesi

As I was walking down the hallway a door suddenly appeared out of nowhere. It was very colourful and I turned on the light so I could see it properly. I wasn’t scared so I opened it. A young lady came out of the door and said "Hello Akanesi, welcome to the world of second chances. They call it the world of second chances because it is a place for people who made a big mistake and they can change it."
Now I haven't made any mistakes in my past because I am only young. But I walked in anyway. I saw a lot of people in there and it was really scary. She told me the reason I’m in there is because in the future I will make the biggest mistake of  of my life and I will regret it everyday. I was there to change my future and stop the mistake from happening.

The Annoying Weatherbomb. - By Sebastian.

I was supposed to go to Dunkirk Reserve on Saturday to watch my friends play rugby. That never happened because a weatherbomb hit.

Saturday morning was boring because all the ultra-heavy rain, strong winds and cold temperature cancelled all outdoor sports. There was nothing to do so I went to the Internet Cafe and played games.

The weatherbomb ruined my day.

Living Green-By Elaine

By throwing your waste in the right bin, you can help the landfills from overfilling with rubbish that could actually go in the recycling or compost. Little things like tossing plastic water bottles in the recycling bin and then throwing food scraps in the compost can help the environment and creatures a lot.

Act now, because before you know it the Earth will just be a giant rubbish tip. The future is in our hands. Do you want clean or dirty hands?

Recycle for worms-By Tyla

You normally just think about throwing out your food scraps when you are finished eating. But why don’t you recycle it? You might have a pet that can eat any sort of food you don’t want.  And if you don't there are other creatures who will eat your leftovers.

The best thing to do if you don’t have any pets is to dig a hole and put all the scraps in. Then cover the scraps with dirt. Why would  you do this? Well you see all your scraps will either be eaten by worms or rot into the ground to make the soil fertile for plants.

Worms make the soil awesome for plants. That’s why you need to recycle your waste.

Mechanical Man-By Quros

I would like to learn how to be a mechanic.

I would like to be a mechanic when I’m a bit older so I can make new inventions. Being a mechanic will be very cool because if my car or motorbike breaks down I can get my own tools and fix it. There’re all kinds of mechanics.
But, I want to be an Auto-mechanic. I shall make family's lifestyle eco-friendly by inventing cars that run on water instead of petrol. I shall be the only one in the world that can fix these cars and I will be rich.

Piano Man-By Samuel

I have always wanted to play the piano because all of my family play music.

Playing the piano could be the best thing to happen to me. I always see my
cousin playing the piano and I always say to myself that I want to do that too.The piano might look easy but I know it is hard to learn.
If I have the chance to learn it, I will take it and play beautiful music at home.

I Want To Learn The Guitar-By Tiperia

What I’ve always wanted to do was to play a guitar.

As soon as I see people playing a guitar I just want to take it out of their hands and play it. The only problem is that I just don’t know how to play. I have always wanted to play a  guitar in front of people.

Most days after school I ask my parents if they could actually sign me up for guitar lessons. If I get permission to sign up for them I would go every single day. Guitars are really popular in music videos so I want to do that. I would look cool in a music video playing a guitar.

A Day In The Life Of A Soldier At Gallipoli-By Harris

6.00am BOOM! Yay, it's another day in the trenches. Just woke up and found my best mate had died in that explosion
7.00am Just finished my breakfast. Bully beef soup.
10:00am. Got ready to attack the Turks. Feeling depressed.
10.30am Back in our trench. I just watched 15 mates of mine die in our failed attack.
12.00pm I  just received my lunch. Hardtack and jam... Yum.
1.pm “The Turks are attacking. Gear up!" An officer yelled.
1.15pm I'm lying on the ground wondering why I can't stand up.
2.15pm I wake up in this tent full of injured soldiers and nurses.
2.20pm Just finished listening to the nurse telling me what happened. I was lucky. I had no injuries and was just shocked by a grenade.
3.00pm Went back up to the trenches.
4.00pm Dinner time, Bully beef and hard tack. Delicious.
7.00pm Getting dark. Watching flares go up in the air. Can’t wait for the next day.

How to stay afloat-By Pallas

Everyone likes swimming right? Well If you are a beginner and you don't know how to swim I have all the tips and advice to keep you safe.

First of all this isn't just advice for the swimming pools. Its basically for anywhere you go that involves water. The Beach, swimming pool, lakes, rivers…...Anywhere.

So lets start. First of all lay on your back and keep your tummy and head up high. Then once you get the hang of that start kicking at your own pace. If you get that right you can add some style. Start doing some backward arm strokes in the water .I guess now you're a pro so keep practicing. I'd rather float than drown and so should you.

Our Museum Trip- By Tyla

At the end of last term the year 7’s and 8’s went to the Auckland War Museum. We were split into groups of 5 with an adult supervisor.

original.jpgI remember seeing nurses uniforms and a picture of a  group of nurses who helped injured soldiers during the war. There was a very old first aid kit. When we were walking around we saw some badges and different kinds of guns by the library. We also saw a Spitfire that was used in WW2.

vickers.jpgIt was sad reading the names of the soldiers who died during the wars.

The last thing we looked at was Gallipoli in Minecraft. I really enjoyed it because it felt like you were really there and only you can see what’s happening right in front of you. The 3D goggles were cool.

Soccer! By Akanesi.

On Wednesday my year 7&8’s Soccer Team went  to Point England Reserve for the Soccer interschools .

We played St Patrick’s School first up. Jessica and I were in the reserves.I swapped with Harris. They were so hard to play because they were very fast and good. Lucky we didn't lose but we didn't win either. The score was 0-0. I was so tired and so were the other Ruapotaka Soccer Team members. Especially us midfielders because we were running everywhere on the field.

It was a great start to the day.

Second At Interschool Football!

On Wednesday, Ruapotaka's Year 7/8 team came second in the Tamaki Cluster Interschool Football (Soccer) Competition! Harris, Jessica and Akanesi from Room 11 were in our team. Lots of fun was had and our students were well drilled, skilled and represented our awesome school responsibly. They were unlucky to lose to the overall champion right on the final buzzer when a 1-1 draw looked likely.

Well done everyone!
